This necklace is traditionally beaded onto recycled plastic cut from old containers. But we have modified that technique slightly to apply the same pattern to soft Kenyan leather instead.
The colourful twisted strands of beads form a long necklace that attaches to the central pendant, which hangs over the sternum. The ladies in our workshop combine small glass beads with larger ones, and cleverly incorporate buttons into the design, which is offset by reflective mirrors on chains. These have an amazing eye-catching effect when worn.
This necklace is worn by Maasai women for ceremonies and dances, and also for every day use whenever leaving the house.
Whenever you are not wearing this necklace it can also be hung in your home as a stunning wall decoration.
